When Love Isn't Enough: What Caregivers Must Do Before Crisis Mode (The Sharegiving Secret with Deborah Greenhut)
Watch the Episode Here
What We Discussed
I sat down with Deborah Greenhut to talk about what families actually get wrong when it's time to move an aging parent. We covered the three stages every family hits (early awareness, mid-stage planning, and crisis mode), and why most families skip the middle one entirely.
Three things came out of this conversation that I think every caregiver needs to hear:
1. The first mistake happens before any logistics. It's how the conversation starts. When adult children lead with urgency and conclusions ("Mom, you can't stay here anymore"), parents hear erasure, not help. Better approach: invite collaboration, start with low-stakes tasks like a closet or storage space, and remember that you're not asking someone to move. You're asking them to dismantle a life system.
2. Calling a realtor is usually too early. It feels like progress. It's often premature. By the time you've called a realtor, you've already decided your timeline, your financial assumptions, and your care plan, whether you realize it or not. The real metric families should focus on isn't sale price. It's net proceeds after months of renovation, continued carrying costs, and the emotional strain of managing the process.
3. Vulnerability is expensive. When families are overwhelmed, predatory practices show up. Contracts that allow reassignment. Inflated repair estimates. Pressure to skip licensed professionals. What disappears isn't just money. It's decades of equity that was supposed to fund assisted living, medical care, and longevity itself.
Deborah's Takeaway
One line from Deborah's Substack summary of our conversation has stuck with me since we recorded:
> "Caregiving doesn't collapse from lack of love. It collapses from lack of structure."
That's the thesis of everything I do. Love is the reason. Structure is the method.
